This blog was sparked by our DIAL IN Podcast conversation with Tim Capaldi, President of the HBA of Southeastern Michigan. As a third-generation remodelling business owner at Capaldi Building Co., Tim shared how staying connected to your industry—even during slow seasons—isn’t just smart. It’s survival. These are Tim's construction networking tips. Catch the full episode on YouTube.

In Construction, Connection = Currency

There’s a myth in construction that networking is just for sales reps and conference people. But ask anyone who’s lasted more than a decade in this industry—and they’ll tell you that your next project is probably coming from your last relationship.

That’s especially true when the economy dips, leads dry up, and everyone’s a little quieter than usual.

“When things get quiet, I meet with architects, designers, realtors—anyone in the industry. You’ve got to find ways to connect, and help each other.”— Tim Capaldi

Tim’s not alone. Through the HBA and even the NAHB’s 20 Club, he’s seen firsthand how business owners from different regions, even competitors, can share openly—and rise together. Not by hoarding secrets. But by swapping notes.

Construction Networking Tips That Actually Work

Whether it’s a trade show, supplier lunch, or an intro over espresso, good networking in this industry pays dividends because it hits three things at once:

  • Proof—A handshake and a job well done is the best marketing you’ll ever do.

  • Knowledge—Swapping ideas isn’t just inspiring—it’s operational gold.

  • Resilience—When your network is deep, slow months become connection months.

You’re not just getting referrals. You’re getting perspective. You’re seeing what’s working for others and adapting it to your business. And sometimes, the right connection turns into your next hire, your next partner, or your best client.

Stop Thinking of It as "Networking"

Tim’s advice? Don’t approach it like networking. Approach it like learning.

“Whatever industry you’re in, whoever you meet—learn not just what they do, but where they’ve been. Your paths are opportunities.”— Tim Capaldi

That mindset flips the switch. It stops being transactional and becomes personal. And that’s the stuff that sticks.

People don’t want a pitch. They want someone they can trust. Someone who gets it. Someone who’s been on-site, in the mud, under pressure, and still got the job done.
